ESAI statement on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza

The Educational Studies Association of Ireland is a voluntary, non-political body, dedicated to the advancement of educational research in Ireland. Our Association provides a forum for a wide diversity of perspectives on educational questions, provided that the voicing of such perspectives observes the requirements and discipline of academic freedom.

As an Association, we condemn violence of all kinds. We are deeply troubled by the humanitarian crisis that is unfolding in Gaza and the unimaginable suffering that is currently being experienced by the civilian population. We are witnessing the complete destruction of an education system. Since the 7th of October 2023, countless schools and universities have been destroyed and, as of 2 April 2024, more than 5,479 students and 261 teachers have been killed in Gaza. A further 7,819 students and 756 teachers have been wounded. Such destruction means that children are being denied their right to receive an education.

We stand in solidarity with all of those committed to providing education and to bringing an end to this humanitarian crisis. We call for an immediate ceasefire and commit ourselves to working with our colleagues from across the world to support the rebuilding of education institutions in Gaza in a spirit of cooperation and peace.
